The Embassy of Ghana in Oslo commemorated the country’s 69th Independence Day on the 5th of March with a distinguished ceremony at the Radisson Blu Conference and Event Centre, bringing together over 120 guests from Norway’s diplomatic, governmental, and business sectors, alongside members of the Ghanaian diaspora.
The celebration served as a platform to reflect on Ghana’s historic journey since 6 March 1957, while outlining the nation’s current policy direction and the deepening partnership between Ghana and Norway.
In her opening address, the Head of Mission, Ambassador Abigail Kwashi, extended a warm welcome to the gathering, acknowledging the strong bonds of friendship and cooperation that continue to define Ghana-Norway relations. She paid tribute to the legacy of Ghana’s founding fathers, emphasizing the country’s longstanding commitment to self-determination, Pan-Africanism, and democratic governance.
Delivering the keynote address, the Ambassador outlined the policy priorities of the administration of President John Dramani Mahama, with a focus on restoring macroeconomic stability, strengthening fiscal discipline, rebuilding investor confidence, and ensuring transparency and accountability across governance structures. She further highlighted the government’s dedication to youth empowerment through strategic investments in job creation, entrepreneurship, digital transformation, and skills development.
She also underscored the evolving scope of Ghana-Norway cooperation, noting that bilateral engagement continues to expand in key sectors such as energy, climate action, ocean governance, peace and security, and trade. She called for enhanced collaboration in emerging areas of mutual interest, including renewable energy, sustainable ocean management, digital innovation, and research.
Special recognition was given to the Ghanaian community in Norway for their invaluable contributions to fostering people-to-people ties and serving as vital partners in the country’s development efforts.
The ceremony concluded with a formal toast, celebrating Ghana’s continued progress and the enduring partnership between Ghana and Norway.
